State Schools Chief Tom Horne critiques armed Arizona school intruder’s sentence
TUCSON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - An armed Arizona school intruder was sentenced Monday and State Schools Chief Tom Horne is critiquing the light sentence.
Daniel Hollander was arrested in January after breaking into an east Tucson school vowing to kill children.
Chief Horne says Hollander deserves more punishment than Monday's sentence of 18 months in prison followed by probation.
Horne issued a statement saying in part:
"As a former Attorney General I know that the public is entitled to be protected from people like this defendant. Probation is not perfect. If this individual has a bad day, he could go into a school and kill students. In my opinion, the prosecutor's recommendation should have been at least 20 years in prison to protect our children."
Horne went on to add that over the last two years, he has increased the number of police officers in schools across the state from 190 to 585.
