OTC birth control pill expands access to more people
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - An over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pill is bringing contraception to more people.
A new study shows more than 26% of the people taking the "O-pill" were not using any birth control before.
It has been available in retail stores since march of 2024. No prescription is required and there are no age limits on using it.
The O-pill costs about $20 a month and is considered 98% effective.
Its low cost and availability help solve two of the biggest barriers to health care: Lack of health insurance and living in a rural area.
O-pill contains only the hormone progestin. It does not have estrogen, which many prescription birth control pills contain.
