Diamondbacks trade Suárez to Mariners, land three promising prospects
PHOENIX (KYMA, KECY) - The Arizona Diamondbacks are parting ways with their most powerful bat, sending third baseman Eugenio Suárez to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for three prospects as part of a deadline deal that signals a shift toward the future in the desert.
The trade, first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, is pending medicals and will bring Arizona first baseman Tyler Locklear, and right-handed pitchers Juan Burgos and Hunter Cranton all ranked among Seattle's Top 25 prospects.
Suárez, 34, leads the National League with 87 RBIs and ranks fifth in Major League Baseball with 36 home runs.
While his bat remains elite, the Diamondbacks nine games out of the NL Wild Card and reeling after a wave of injuries are choosing to retool. Suárez is set to hit free agency this winter.
First baseman Tyler Locklear, 24, brings both power and consistency at the plate and could become a long-term answer at a position where Arizona has struggled for stability.
Right-handed pitcher Juan Burgos is one of Seattle's fastest-rising arms, posting a dominant 0.87 ERA in Triple-A, and is projected to contend for a bullpen spot in the majors by 2026.
Rounding out the group is Hunter Cranton, another right-hander with a fastball that touches 100 miles per hour, while still raw, he's viewed by scouts as a potential high-leverage reliever down the line.
This is the second time the Diamondbacks have moved on from Suárez, who was originally acquired from Seattle in a November 2023 trade.
Though his bat helped Arizona stay afloat in the standings early, mounting injuries including Tommy John surgery to ace Corbin Burnes changed the club's direction.
General Manager Mike Hazen has not publicly ruled out additional moves ahead of Thursday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.
With multiple veterans on expiring contracts and a strong farm system to build around, Arizona appears to be threading the needle: Staying competitive while stockpiling young talent.
Seattle, meanwhile, adds Suárez back into a lineup chasing the postseason, but for the Diamondbacks, this is about more than 2025. It's about resetting the timeline for contention.
