EYE ON HISTORY: Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding

(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - On July 29, 1981, in a fairy tale wedding, Britain's heir to the throne, Prince Charles, married Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

The wedding day was declared a national holiday.

2,700 guests attended the service, an estimated million watched from the streets, and 700 million worldwide viewed it on their televisions.

The celebrations began the night before with a fireworks display, the largest the country had seen in over two centuries.

The wedding of the 20-year-old Diana to the 32-year-old prince was largely welcomed by the public.
