YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - As results continue to trickle in to decide the winners of the Primary Elections, Adelita Grijalva and Daniel Butierez were projected as the winners for their respective parties.

Grijalva won the Democratic ticket during Tuesday's election, defeating Daniel Hernandez, Deja Foxx, Patrick Harris and Jose Malvido.

Following her win, Grijalva posted to X, thanking voters while adding, "This movement doesn't end...We're just getting started."

Grijalva, the daughter of late congressman Raul Grijalva, feels the stops she's made throughout the district helped her land the win, though she was still on the edge of her seat once results started coming in.

"I was just like anxious about it, and then the numbers started coming in, and they just consistently stayed at like 60 plus, and I was very excited," she says.

Over on the Republican side, Butierez defeated Jorge Rivas and Jimmy Rodriguez.

Some key policy points for Butierez are the border and homelessness. He said that his campaign strategy secured him the primary win.

"I kind of expected it, I've always expected it. I didn't even know why there were Republicans in it when I just got done running," Butierez says.

With the General Election just months away, Grijalva says they should keep their focus on important policies.

"I just would hope that we can have a dialogue about the differences in policy, which are very significant. Let's talk about policy. Let's talk about what we're going to do in office," Grijalva said.

Meanwhile, Butierez adds he would like to see things go in a different direction.

"I had a lot of respect for her father. I didn't agree with what he did, but it's time for a change…We don't need a oligarchy," he says.

Both candidates will be facing off in the General Election on Tuesday, September 23.
