Grand Canyon north rim evacuated as wildfire spreads

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Visitors at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon were forced to evacuate this week as a wildfire rapidly advanced toward the area.

According to the National Park Service, the "White Sage Fire" began Wednesday southeast of the town of Fredonia, Arizona.

By Thursday night, the fire had grown to approximately 1,000 acres.

Officials say the fire's path moving toward Jacob Lake prompted immediate evacuations to keep visitors and staff safe.

Crews continue to monitor and fight the blaze as conditions evolve.
