Suspected active shooter killed at a church in Michigan

UPDATE (5:46 PM): Authorities in Wayne, Michigan held a press conference Sunday afternoon to provide updates on the active shooter situation at a church.

Police say an alleged gunman began firing shots outside the CrossPointe Community Church in the Detroit suburb.

"The suspect exited his vehicle wearing a tactical vest armed with a long gun and a hand gun. He approached the church building and began firing his weapon," said Chief Ryan Strong with the Wayne Police Department.

During the press conference, Chief Strong said two church staff members shot at the gunman outside the building, killing him and likely prevented a mass shooting.

"We are grateful for the heroic actions of the churches staff members who undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented a large scale mass shooting," Strong expressed.

Strong said the shooter was a 31-year-old man from Romulus, Michigan.

"His motivations are unknown, but at this point, it appears he was suffering from a mental health crisis," Strong added.

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A suspected active shooter was killed at a Wayne, Michigan church Sunday morning.

The Wayne Police Department responded to reports of an active shooter at CrossPointe Community Church around 11:00 a.m. Eastern.

"My son brought me the phone and it was my mom in a very frantic voice telling me that there was an active shooter at her church behind us, and that she was hiding in the woods with my aunt," said Sandy Salyer, whose mother is a parishioner.

"I started hearing, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,' and I just booked it to the bathroom and I hid with another parishioner and we heard footsteps, running, and a lot of gunshots, and we just stayed there until everything was quiet and then we got out of the building and went out into the woods where everybody was gathered," said Wendy Bodin, a parishioner.

According to authorities, when officers arrived at the scene they determined that a church security guard had shot and killed the suspect.

They say one person was also shot in the leg, but no other injuries were reported.

The church had just wrapped up a special service that was being live streamed to its YouTube page.

There is no word yet on the circumstances leading up to the shooting, but the investigation is ongoing.

Dan Bongino, Deputy Director of the FBI, posted to social media saying, "Our leadership and support teams are on the ground, at the scene, in Wayne, Michigan providing assistance and investigative support."
