WWII Veteran’s remains returns to Kansas after about 80 years

WICHITA, Kan. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - After about 80 years lost under the sea, a World War II Veteran's remains arrived in Wichita, Kansas.

Wichita native and U.S. Army Air Forces pilot, First Lieutenant Herbert G. Tennyson's aircraft was shot down in 1944 off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

A non-profit called "Project Recover" spent years searching for the plane. It was found in 2017, and the Tennyson's remains were identified a few years later.

He was given a dignified arrival ceremony Friday morning when he touched down, and a proper burial will be held for Tennyson on the June 27.
