55 attorneys general agree to $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - 55 attorneys general agree to a $7.4 billion settlement with bankrupt drug maker, Purdue Pharma.

The agreement was reached Monday with the attorneys general of all 50 states, Washington D.C. and four U.S. territories.

The payment is intended to resolve thousands of lawsuits alleging Purdue Pharma's oxycontin created and fueled a nationwide opioid addiction crisis.

According to officials, members of the Sackler family, owners of Purdue, confirm their plan to move forward with the settlement.

The Purdue Pharma settlement in principle is the nation's largest settlement to date, with individuals responsible for the opioid crisis.

The settlement ends the Sacklers' control of Purdue and their ability to sell opioids in the united states.
