Small plane carrying six people crashes into the Pacific Ocean
POINT LOMA, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A small plane with six people on board crashed into the Pacific Ocean Sunday off Point Loma, California.
The aircraft, identified as a Cessna 414, was reported down shortly before 1:00 p.m., according to San Diego Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.
FlightAware, a flight tracking tool, shows the path of the flight, and it appears that the plane took off from San Diego International Airport and was headed to Phoenix, Arizona.
A Coast Guard spokesperson says a debris field was located in the ocean a short time later, in water that is about 200 feet deep.
An NBC affiliate in San Diego said the plane was owned by Optimal Health System, a nutritional supplement company based in Arizona.
On Monday, the Federal Aviation Administration said the six people on board, a pilot and five passengers, were killed following the crash.
Tyson Wislofsky, a local surfer who was in the area at the time, described what he saw when the plane went down.
"It was surreal. It was one of those things that I was asking myself, 'Did i imagine that splash?' Because again i'm looking around like did anyone else see that," Wislofsky shared. "After I saw the splash, about six seconds later, it was dead silent and I knew that they went in the water nose first, at a high speed."
