Second eaglet in California leaves the nest

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - The second of two baby bald eagles in Big Bear, California has left the nest.

The eaglet, "Gizmo," stretched her wings on what's called the 'front porch' of the eagle's nest and fledged at 8:27 a.m. Pacific.

It wasn't the most graceful flight, which is why they're called fledgelings, but a wider view showed her gliding to perch on the nearby Simba Tree.

Her sister, Sunny, fledged five days ago and has returned to the nest once since then.

These two eaglets are not banded, and will go on to live lives out of the camera's view.

The Friends of Big Bear Valley's Eagle Cam has been up since 2015, but reached a cult following during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the first year parents Jackie and Shadow have brought two eaglets to maturity.
