Taylor Swift buys back master recordings of her first six albums
(CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Taylor Swift is officially the owner of her entire music catalogue.
In an open letter posted to her website Friday, the pop icon revealed she bought back the master recordings from her first six albums, saying in part, "All of the music I ever made now belongs to me."
This ends a years-long public fight with investors who purchased her original recordings from her former record label.
As the battle played out, Swift re-recorded new versions of her old albums to take back control of her work.
"This is completely to her advantage but it's also to the advantage of millions of other artists and millions of people who didn't understand the value in owning your creative work," said Jem Aswad, Variety's Executive Music Editor. "To be fair, the man who originally brought the catalogue, Scooter Braun, she's demonized him quite a bit. I'm not quite sure if he's really as bad they make it seem because, you know, he was just doing business."
It's still unclear how much Swift paid to get back her masters. Some estimate it could have been more than $300 million.
