Marine Veteran in California helps correct headstones of fallen soldiers

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Memorial Day is a time to reflect on the fallen who have served our country, and a Marine Veteran is making it his mission to correct the headstones of soldiers no longer with us.

It all started with a visit to the Presidio National Cemetery. Danny Casey and his son went to learn about each of the 40 Medal of Honor recipients.

To his surprise, mistakes had been printed on these headstones. Some of them more than a century old. Casey said something had to be done to preserve the story of the fallen.

"125 years from now, this stone will be fixed, and that people who care about our culture our history need to know about this," Casey expressed. "This has been our hobby: To go out there and fix history."

Casey says it's a process to change the headstones.

He first confirmed his suspicions of a mistake with a historian. Then, he requested the changes be made in a detailed write up to the National Cemetery Administration.

He says he's proud that it's something he and his son can do together.
