UPDATE (4:37 PM): Police held a press conference where they gave updated information on the Liverpool parade incident.

They confirmed a British man has been arrested after plowing his car through a crowd of thousands lining the streets at a parade in Liverpool.

The crowd was on hand to celebrate the Liverpool F.C.'s English Premier League title victory when a van veered through the crowd leaving numerous people injured.

"Sadly, four of the injured were children who were enjoying the day with their friends and their families. We can confirm that our teams treated 20 patients at the scene with minor injuries and these did not need hospital treatment, 27 patients in total were taken to hospital by ambulance and we believe two of those including one of the children have sustained serious injuries."

Authorities are describing it as a "major incident," but says terrorism is not suspected.

"What I can tell you is that we believe this to be an isolated incident and we are not currently looking for anyone else in relation to it, the incident is not being treated as terrorism. We would ask that people refrain from sharing distressing footage from the incident online," says Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police.

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - In the United Kingdom, a car hit a number of people at a parade celebrating Liverpool F.C.'s Premier League title win.

According to Merseyside Police's post on X, they received reports of a car crashing into people on Water Street Monday after 6:00 p.m. British Summer Time.

They also said the car stopped at the scene and a suspect, who Merseyside Police identified as a 53-year-old British man from the Liverpool area, was then arrested.

Merseyside Police is asking people "not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding" the crash, and says "extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances" leading up to the crash.

It is not clear how many people may have been hurt.

Following the news of the crash, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer posted to X saying, "The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected."

"I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident," Starmer added.

In addition, Liverpool F.C. issued a statement saying they are in contact with the police while adding, "Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident. We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident."
