Moderate conditions last throughout the holiday weekend
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A system of low pressure moving through bringing breezy conditions across the Desert Southwest Sunday, especially in Yuma and Imperial Counties.
Winds are expected to reach 20 to 30 miles per hour at times, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours. Combined with low relative humidity and dry brush, these gusts are increasing fire weather concerns, especially in open desert areas and near agricultural fields.
Despite the wind, temperatures will stay near normal for late May. Residents in Yuma and El Centro can expect afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s, with cooler overnight lows dropping into the mid-60s to low 70s.
According to the National Weather Service, winds should calm after sunset Sunday night, setting up a relatively quiet evening. However, breezy conditions will return on Monday, especially across western areas near the Colorado River and eastern Imperial County.
Through midweek, expect more of the same: Sunny skies, dry air, and gradually warming temperatures. Highs may climb back above 100 degrees by Tuesday or Wednesday.
By next weekend, another weather system could bring slightly cooler air and a small chance of rain, even though Yuma and Imperial Counties are expected to stay dry.
Stay updated on local fire safety guidance and use extra caution outdoors this weekend.
