Senate moves to nullify California’s electric vehicle mandate
(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - If you've watched a game show where they give away cars, you're probably familiar with the term "California emissions".
Federal law has given the state authority to set its own vehicle emissions standards for decades. Now, the Senate is moving to overturn that. Last year, California decided to phase out the sale of gas powered cars across the state by the year 2035.
That decision has infuriated Republicans who are now taking action under the Congressional Review Act that allows the Senate to overturn California's rule by a simple majority instead of the 60 votes of action that it would usually require.
The problem is that the House's Government Accountability Office says that CRA cannot be used for that, but Senate Republicans say that the GAO does not have the authority to make that decision.
