Yuma police increasing patrols for Memorial Day weekend
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Memorial Day weekend is almost here and while many are making plans to relax or hit the road, the Yuma Police Department (YPD) is stepping up patrols.
With more people expected to enjoy the long weekend ahead, YPD says they're increasing patrols and visibility to make sure safety stays a top priority.
"Our main focus is going to be identifying and apprehending impaired drivers to keep our road safe during the holiday," said Christina Fernandez, Public Information Officer with YPD.
While some locals are hitting the road for the three day weekend, others are taking the time to relax.
"Oh no, we're just gonna stay home, we don't wanna get caught up in all that traffic," said David Bernacett Sr., a Yuma local.
One local supports the extra patrols this holiday season, saying it protects everyone, including drivers.
"I feel like there's probably gonna be a lot of people out drinking, and so getting those people off the streets if they are drinking and driving will lowering the chance of them hitting someone or causing more damage to their lives," said Sedona Miller.
Memorial Day weekend coincides with graduation season, so YPD reminds the community to celebrate safely and responsible.
"Graduations are taking place, so we want to let everyone know underage drinking is illegal. It is a crime if adults are purchasing alcohol and supplying it to minors and we want everyone to celebrate responsibly this week, and hopefully secure their future," said Christina Fernandez.
YPD says their increased patrolling will run through Monday.
