Winds pick up this week after a warm Mother’s Day
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Mother's Day brought sunny skies and above-average warmth to the Desert Southwest, but a pattern shift is on the way to start the week.
A weather disturbance is moving into the region, bringing cooler temperatures and increasing winds across Yuma and Imperial counties.
While Sunday saw highs around 100°F in Yuma, the National Weather Service expects a gradual cooldown into midweek, with temperatures dropping closer to seasonal averages.
Winds will be the most noticeable change, especially Monday and Tuesday. Gusts between 25 and 35 miles per hour are expected in the afternoons, particularly in southeast California, where a Wind Advisory is in effect from early Monday through early Wednesday for areas including eastern Imperial County.
These gusty conditions combined with low humidity will also elevate fire danger, especially in areas with dry vegetation. Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and secure loose objects that could blow away.
Skies will remain mostly clear throughout the week, with some scattered high clouds. By the latter half of the week, temperatures are expected to rebound slightly, hovering near the normal range for mid-May.
