Two dead, one dog killed following plane crash in a California neighborhood

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Two people and one dog were killed after a single engine plane crashed in Simi Valley Saturday afternoon.

The plane slammed into two homes on the ground, forcing part of the neighborhood to evacuate.

A Ring camera captured the fiery explosion from the single engine plane that slammed into two homes on High Meadow Street near Wood Ranch Parkway in Simi Valley Saturday afternoon.

"I tried to put out the fire on the plane but it exploded and I could smell a lot of fuel, and gas so I left the area," said Arman Hakakian, a Simi Valley homeowner.

Hakakian was in his backyard when the plane came crashing down, hitting both his home and his neighbor's, causing extensive fire and structure damage. He remembers being concerned when he saw the plane approach his neighborhood.

The Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD) said the pilot, one passenger and a dog died in the crash. There were no survivors onboard.

"The scene as you would imagine because it is a plane crash, high velocity impact there, so the scene is very chaotic, a lot of debris," said Casey Nicholson, Public Information Officer with SVPD.

The plane is described as a Vans RV-10, which is a type of kit plane.

According to the FAA, the plane departed from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster and was heading to Camarillo Airport.

An NBC affiliate in Los Angeles obtained the air traffic control recordings with the pilot. It was recorded at 1:49 p.m. and was the last radio contact air traffic control made with the pilot.

After multiple attempts to reach the pilot, the plane went down shortly after around 1:51 p.m.

The NTSB will be looking into the recordings with air traffic control along with the weather forecasts at the time of the accident and any surveillance footage from the crash. It could take up to two years before their final report is completed.
