Locals react to President Trump’s 100 days in office
Locals and state senators spoke with reporter Manoah Tuiasosopo and shared their early progress reports on Trump's work thus far.
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Residents across Yuma shared their thoughts to President Donald Trump's first 100 days in office.
The Desert Southwest has been in the front row to many of the president's border security policies.
Arizona State Senator Tim Dunn applauds President Trump for his swift work in that department.
Senator Tim Dunn (R-District 13) says, "Policy matters. I think especially from the Yuma standpoint, securing the border, border patrol is now able to focus on their job. They're getting more fentanyl abductions. So, I think that's the biggest thing for Arizona."
As for the economy, Trump's tariff announcements on Canada have caused unease among winter visitors, causing a few to depart early.
That may lead to some economic uncertainty in Yuma County, according to Arizona Senator Brian Fernandez.
Senator Fernandez (D-District 23) says, "Yuma County, we are so dependent on our winter visitors. I believe there's a 50% drop in Canadians coming to the United States. If that continues, we're going to have some real struggles."
But Dunn assures winter visitors that it's not Canada the president has an issue with.
"Understand that it's us against China and I believe we'll be back in negotiations with Canada and Mexico because China's the real enemy," Senator Dunn explained.
Local Ed Nance says there's no gain without a little pain.
"He's doing everything I voted for him and hoped that he would do. I think we're going to feel some short-pain but I think at the end of the day he straightens things out. I think it will be worth it," shares Nance.
According to national polls, the majority of Americans have expressed dissatisfaction with the president's job since taking office.
Within the president's first 100 days, hands-off protests have popped up nationwide, including on the streets of Yuma.
"I love when either side tells us how they feel," shared Fernandez.
Dunn says that while peaceful protests are okay, it is unacceptable that people are vandalizing Teslas.
"I think it's a shame that people are scratching Tesla cars. Peaceful protests are what our constitution is based on," Dunn explains.
