U.S. fertility rates near record low

(CNN, KYMA/KECY) - Women in the United States are still having fewer babies than usual.

About 3.6 million babies were born in the U.S. last year. That's an increase of less than 1% from 2023, which is a record low.

The amount of children women had, a metric known as the fertility rate has been dropping since 2008.

There are many reasons why, including the cost of raising children and weaning confidence in maternal health care, a jump in the fertility rate in 2021, some thought might lead to a COVID-19 baby bump was short-lived.

It spells trouble for the "baby boom" President Donald Trump had been hoping for.
