Crowd cheers after NHL player Alex Ovechkin breaks goal record

ELMONT, N.Y. (CBS, KYMA/KECY) - Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin became the National Hockey League's (NHL) all-time goal leader Sunday during a game against the New York Islanders in New York.

Ovechkin scored his 895th career NHL goal in the second period, breaking the previous record of 894 set by Wayne Gretzky in 1999.

Gretzky attended the game and spoke at the ceremony afterwards, saying he had promised to be the first to shake Ovechkin's hand when he broke the record.

Video filmed by Maksim Krenitskii (@krenitsky) shows the crowd at UBS Arena erupting in cheers and Ovechkin's teammates surrounding him moments after the historic goal.

The footage also shows Ovechkin speaking to the crowd during a ceremony after the game.
