What the City of Yuma is doing to prevent distracted driving
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Whether its texting, eating, or even adjusting the radio, distracted driving is a growing concern on our roads. Expert say this is putting everyone at risk.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), distracted driving causes more than 325,000 serious injuries every year. According to the latest data, in 2023 the National Road Safety Foundation (NRSF) says there where over 13,000 deaths on Arizona roads.
David Reich, NRSF's Director of Public Relations says, "That means we estimate about 330 people were killed on Arizona roads because of distraction. I mean, any death is too much, but when you think about something that is such a preventable tragedy, it's just a total waste."
Sgt. Johnny Vidrio with Yuma Police Department (YPD) says distracted driving plays a big role in our community as well.
"Throughout the year of 2024, we had a total of 207 citations just for cellphone distracted driving. We average about 2,000 accidents a year and a lot of those the contributing factor is going to be the cell phones," Sgt. Vidrio shared.
YPD says if you do decide to drive with your cell phone there are preventative measures you can take while being on the roads.
"If you're driving with a cell phone, use a hands-free device. A lot of these new vehicles have hands free capabilities and even older vehicles have the ability to upgrade your stereo system to where you can have hands free devices," Vidrio said.
YPD is holding a campaign for the month of April call hashtag put it down. They say if you're driving and using your phone. Distracted driving violations will be strictly enforced.
