Padres edge Braves 1-0, secure third straight win
SAN DIEGO (KYMA, KECY) - The San Diego Padres made it three straight victories to open the season, edging the Atlanta Braves 1-0 in another tightly contested matchup at Petco Park on Saturday night.
Randy Vasquez set the tone for San Diego, tossing six scoreless innings while working around early trouble.
The Braves threatened multiple times, but the Padres' defense, including a key double play in the fourth, kept them off the board.
The game's only run came in the seventh, when Yuli Gurriel, pinch-hitting for Gavin Sheets, dropped a slow roller up the middle, bringing home Xander Bogaerts. That was all the support the Padres bullpen needed, as Wandy Peralta, Steven Wilson, and Robert Suarez shut the door, with Suarez locking down the save.
San Diego looks to complete the four game sweep Sunday night, with Nick Pivetta taking the mound against the Braves.
