Yuma Community Theater presents “Cabaret”!
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY)Â - The Yuma Community Theater will be performing their rendition of "Cabaret" at the Historic Yuma Theater from March 21 through March 30.
"Cabaret is such an important story and it's such a it's such a well written story," said Cris Drewek, part of the ensemble cast in this production. "This is something that the Yuma Community Theater has been kind of putting years into preparation for performing this. We have been kind of slowly building up and gaining momentum as a theater company, and we feel like now we're ready to put on this this production."
"Cabaret" is a story set in the 1920's to 1930's Weimar, Germany. The play depicts the classes and nightlife from a very gritty and heavy time period but also highlights the rise of fascism in 1930's Germany. According to Drewek, the show just does such a great job of showing the dichotomy of this bright lurid nightlife and social culture.
"Against the backdrop of this rising fascism, [Cabaret] is a very timeless story and it shows the importance of people paying attention and and caring about things," said Drewek. "The consequences of not caring are very heavy, so we put a lot of time and a lot of energy into making sure that we do the show justice because we feel like this is a uniquely special production."
The Yuma Community Theater is comprised of many local performers who strive to put the story on the stage into life for their audience. It is a sentiment that is not taken lightly by the small ensemble cast.
"Our cast has gotten really close as we've been preparing for this performance," said Dante-Lee Emerson, another member of this ensemble cast. "It's a very promiscuous performance, but it's all within the context of this is rising era of fascism in Germany. We're making sure that we do our best to pay respects to that time period while also just like having fun with it."
The small ensemble cast only features 16 performers with many playing multiple roles. Emerson himself will be portraying three separate characters during the show. But to those who take the stage, they feel a great sense of pride in bringing this story to life for our Yuma community.
"Working with this cast has been a great experience," said Emerson. "I love working with them and just being able to come over every day and just do what we need to do."
"Cabaret" will be performed at the Historic Yuma Theater on Friday, March 21 at 7 p.m. They will also have two shows on Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and will conclude the weekend with one final performance on Sunday at 2 p.m. In case you missed it this weekend, they will have the same performance times next weekend as well, March 28-30.
