California man wins $50 million lawsuit against Starbucks

(NBC, KYMA/KECY) - A California delivery driver has won a $50 million jury verdict against Starbucks for burn injuries he suffered when a scalding hot drink fell onto his lap at drive-thru location in 2020.

This video, released by Trial Lawyers for Justice who represent the plaintiff, apparently shows the moment a venti-sized hot tea fell from a takeout tray onto Michael Garcia's lap.

Garcia's attorneys argued his injuries were caused by the drink not being secured in the carry-out tray, and said the coffee company should be held accountable.

Garcia apparently suffered third degree burns to his genitals and had to undergo a skin graft as part of his treatment.

Starbucks released a statement after the verdict saying while it sympathizes with Garcia, the company disagrees with the verdict, and believes the damages awarded are excessive.

The company says it intends to appeal the verdict.
