MCAS Yuma hosts the 59th Annual Yuma Airshow
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The excitement was palpable Saturday at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma as the base hosted the 59th Annual Yuma Airshow, a highly anticipated event that draws crowds from across the region and around the world.
As spectators lined the airfield, rehearsals earlier in the morning gave a preview of the breathtaking aerial demonstrations and displays that would unfold throughout the day.
From powerful military aircraft to sleek aerobatic planes, and everything in between, the Yuma Airshow showcased a diverse range of aviation excellence. The event also included thrilling high-speed car exhibitions, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy.
Capt. Owen Vanwyk, the Public Affairs Officer at MCAS Yuma, expressed the excitement that comes with hosting such a grand event.
"We're so excited to host the fifty-ninth annual Yuma Air Show, bringing in not only the local community to see what we do, but really bringing those in from around the region and across the world to see what Yuma is all about," he said.
Major Craig Turner, the F-35 demo pilot, also spoke to the significance of the event, especially given his personal connection to Yuma.
"Yeah, I was stationed in Yuma for about seven years, so this is kind of like my second home," Turner said. "Getting to come to Yuma to do this demonstration is an awesome experience for me personally, to be able to give back to the community after spending so many years in Yuma."
The airshow provided an exciting opportunity for the local community to witness impressive aviation feats and engage with military personnel who play a crucial role in the success of the event.
It was a celebration not just of aviation, but also of the enduring connection between the military and the Yuma community.
As the gates opened at 9 a.m. and the show began at 10:30 a.m., thousands gathered to witness the world-class demonstrations.
