Local man shares how he feels competing in “The Voice”

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Kolby Cordell was born in Flagstaff, Arizona, and lived in Yuma for about a year.

Now he is getting ready to fine tune his voice as he appears on the popular NBC singing show, "The Voice."

Cordell discovered his passion for singing at 17-years-old, and for six years he would travel three hours just for studio time.

He describes how he felt getting that call saying he officially made it on the show.

"I didn't believe it at first 'cause I had been through this process before, but you know, this time was different, so when I found out we really doing this, I panicked a little bit, I was like, 'Oh for real. This is...its good to be back. Let's do it," said Cordell.

The Voice judges John Legend and Michael Buble  both turned their chairs for the local musician, but Cordell ended up choosing legend.

Yuma local Troy Patterson is excited to see Cordell take the singing state again next week.

"I want to hear what he's got. You know, if he goes further, you want to follow him all the way to the top if he makes it...Pretty hard to get there, so it's pretty cool if he made it," said Patterson.

Cordell says he wants to show his son that anything is possible.

He says that God, his mother and father inspired him along this journey, however, one artist truly inspired him the most.

An artist with who’s known for saying the message: "Never Say Never."

"If I don't go see that movie, I don't get turned on to a road that I can go take, I just couldn't take it where I was leaving, so shout-out Justin Bieber...Man, you're the reason the the world gets Kolby Cordell today," said Cordell.

He will be competing in the battle rounds next Monday at 7 p.m. on NBC.
