AWC professor is in critical condition following bike crash

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Doctors tell David Burris' family these next few days are critical for his recovery.

Despite uncertainty, his wife, Sarah Burris, says she's holding onto faith and overwhelming support from the community: "We're in a very critical moment right now."

Burris, 41, remains in critical condition after being hit by a car while riding his bike in Somerton.

Doctors told Sarah that her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury and broken ribs. They're currently monitoring the swelling in his brain.

"These next couple of days are going to be very key. The doctor says critical in his care because the swelling is supposed to be the worst for the next couple of days," Sarah shared.

His wife says despite the difficult reality, she finds peace knowing it was just a tragic accident.

"It was just an accident. It sucks but it was just an accident. No one wakes up in the morning and says 'I would like to harm someone's father,'" Sarah spoke.

As she and her family process what's happening, Sarah says the outpouring support of the community has been overwhelming.

"Appreciative isn't even the right word. I'm overwhelmed with all the support from the community," Sarah expressed.
