Calexico council plans to save ambulance services

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY)- The City of Calexico says it's working on a plan to save their ambulance services.

Calexico Acting City Manager and Acting Fire Chief Juan Contreras announced the services could stop due to low paramedic personnel.

The city learned four paramedics might leave the fire department.

However, Calexico Mayor Diana Nuricumbo says they have a plan to save ambulance services.

"One is actually going to stay...we have another one in the works to come onboard and we also have a fireman who is also a paramedic who is also going to help out when needed," said Nuricumbo.

Contreras says the city is seeking additional funds to add to their paramedic personnel.

"We all know Calexico does not have a hospital. The ambulance is the only public  ambulance service in the whole county so Calexico is very unique in this aspect...the community deserves our hospital on wheels," said Contreras.

Meanwhile, the city manager is working with AMR, who according to Mayor Nuricumbo says "is a private company who provides services to the rest of the cities in Imperial Valley."

Nuricumbo says AMR will be assisting the City of Calexico until the Calexico Fire Department is full staffed.
