Senior Center in Somerton hosts early Thanksgiving celebration

SOMERTON, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Seniors in Somerton celebrated Thanksgiving a little early this year.

On Wednesday, the Desert Valley Senior Center provided seniors with a hearty Thanksgiving meal, live music, and lots of dancing.

They also celebrated recent and upcoming birthdays, which they do every third Wednesday of the month.

Several Somerton City Council members were in attendance as well as a local firefighter union that donated $500.

"The donation can help them with food, clothing, blankets, and jackets for the cold season… This is the perfect time to give back to them especially because a lot of them are on fixed incomes so we're just trying to help them make the holidays a little more special," says Crystal Ontiveros, the President of IAFF Somerton Chapter Fire Union Local 1234.

The local firefighters also visit the seniors every Tuesday to provide blood pressure checks, hang out, and answer any questions the seniors have.
