Yuma County Anti-Drug Coalition gives annual update to Yuma City Council

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The Yuma County Anti-Drug Coalition provided an update for the Yuma City Council at Tuesday night's work session.

The coalition has grown to over 150 members and has existed over the past 20 years trying to battle substance abuse issues throughout the Yuma Community.

They also talked about the community partnerships they have formed.

“When we come together we network, we try to work on different projects together we find out how we can support each other in other events, so it’s important to have that support," said Shelley Mellon, the Chair of the Yuma County Anti-Drug Coalition.

Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls shares why organizations are so beneficial to the city.

“It crosses boundaries, crosses companies, social groups, and all sorts of elements that truly encapsulate our greater community and the city of Yuma needs to be heavily engaged in those kinds of efforts," said Mayor Doug Nicholls.

The coalition says they are actively involved within the community.

“We gave out over 100,000 pieces of information and resources last year, 20,000 synch bags that are going into the homes, we have frisbees with our QR code that goes to our website," said Mellon.

The coalition is hoping to once again receive the Drug Free Community Grant to continue their efforts in January.
