Justin Herbert signs extension with the Chargers
The Chargers star quarterback becomes the highest paid player in the league with new deal
YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Justin Herbert has signed a five-year extension with the Los Angeles Chargers today. The deal is reported worth $262.5 million, per NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
This extension will pay the 25-year-old an average of $52.5 million per year and make Herbert the highest paid player in NFL history by average annual value, surpassing Lamar Jackson's recent deal.
The former number six overall pick out of Oregon still has two years on his rookie contract. This extension will run through 2029.
Herbert has passed for 14,089 yards, the most through a quarterback's first three NFL seasons. The Chargers franchise quarterback is also the only player, alongside Peyton Manning, to have three seasons of throwing 25 or more touchdown passes to start a career.
The Chargers open training camp tomorrow at Jack Hammett Sports Park in Costa Mesa, CA. For information on free tickets visit https://www.chargers.com/camp/.
