Backpack left on California freeway shuts down for emitting smoke

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) - Police shut down an overpass in Los Angeles due to an unattended backpack emitting smoke on the sidewalk.

A passerby reported the suspicious backpack on the Burbank Boulevard Friday afternoon. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department's Arson and Explosives Detail responded to the incident.

The backpack could eventually be seen fully engulfed in flames. All lanes of the Northbound 5 freeway were closed.

It's still not clear what may have caused the backpack to start smoking or who it may belong to.
