Sick kitten stolen from the Humane Society of Yuma, shelter asking for public’s help

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - Siul, a two-month-old sick kitten was taken from her kennel near the front office on June 30, Friday afternoon around 4:00 p.m.

Annette Lagunas, Humane Society of Yuma (HSOY) Executive Director describes Siul as a very small, tabby gray and black kitten.

The Humane Society is worried because Siul could lose her eye if she's not returned soon.

"So that eye was under such treatment that many times with those baby kittens we have to remove them if they don't get better," explained Lagunas. "And so our concern is this poor kitten is not in any veterinary care at this point and we don't know what it needs and so we really just want this kitten back."

A Hispanic man and woman, both spoke English, arrived in medical scrubs and were asked to complete an adoption form, but did not complete the paperwork.

Sgt. Lori Franklin with the Yuma Police Department (YPD) said security footage shows the man leaving abruptly with the kitten in his hand as the woman waited in a dark gray Honda Civic.

"There's a front plate that kind of resembles a Sonora, Mexico plate but again we can't zoom in enough to get any numbers or anything off of it," said Franklin.

Lagunas said there has been word on YPD's Facebook page from residents that the suspects headed straight for Walmart after kidnapping her.

One of the locals wrote, "My kids and I saw this couple in Walmart that day! We all held and cuddled this sweet kitty. I'm so sad!"

Lagunas has a message for the suspects.

"At this point, this is about that cat's safety and well-being and we need that kitten back in our care so that we can properly treat and manage any pain it may be having because of that eye," Lagunas said.

Lagunas said the suspects could have adopted Siul and they would have provided treatment and medication for her, but they never gave the shelter the opportunity.
