Imperial edges Calexico in flag football rematch
The Tigers barely beat the Bulldogs 19-18 in a defensive flag football gem
IMPERIAL, Calif. (KYMA) - The Imperial Tigers hung on to a narrow 19-18 victory against the Calexico Bulldogs at Shimamoto-Simpson Stadium on a Monday night rematch.
The first edition of this duel was a 41-0 beat down by Imperial, but this go around the clash was a lot more even.
The game was a defensive and physical battle, with both teams holding one another to no points in the first quarter. In fact, Calexico held Imperial at the goal line and forced a turnover on downs.
Eventually the scoring would start in the second quarter, with the Tigers' Addison Clark cracking the scoreboard first on an incredible catch and run on a screen pass, making Bulldogs miss.
On the very next drive, quarterback Giovanna Ortiz and the Bulldogs would orchestrate a drive that would culminate with a deep ball to Arellana Garcia.
With the win, Imperial advances to 17-3-2, with one loss in the Imperial Valley League to Vincent Memorial. They sit pretty in second place in the standings. Their next game is a revenge game against Vincent Memorial Wednesday night.
On the other hand, Calexico falls to 10-4 and drops to 4-4 in league play. They are in fourth place behind the Scots, Tigers and Wildcats. The Bulldogs next game is also against Vincent Memorial on Monday, October 13 after a week long break.
