Basketball star Brittney Griner appears in a Moscow court

(KYMA, KECY/ NBC News) - Basketball star Brittney Griner arrived at a Moscow court for her trial on Friday.

Griner was arrested in February on cannabis possession charges at an airport while traveling to play for a Russian team.

The arrest came less than a week before Russian troops invaded Ukraine, and has since been kept there after authorities say she was carrying vape canisters with cannabis oil.

Griner's detention was extended another six months, to December 20th, at a closed-door preliminary hearing on Monday in the Moscow suburb of Khimki.

If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison.
