Calexico kicks off 117th anniversary with Easter egg hunt and community festivities

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) - Crummett Park came alive Saturday morning as families from across the Imperial Valley gathered for the City of Calexico's annual Easter Egg Hunt.

The event featured over 10,000 Easter eggs, live music, food vendors, and a visit from the Easter Bunny, and it was all free to the public.

Parents brought lawn chairs while kids showed up with baskets in hand, ready to race across the grass in search of colorful treasures. The egg hunt marks the start of a weeklong celebration for the city's 117th anniversary.

"This is just the beginning," said Eduardo Quintero, Cultural Arts Assistant for the City of Calexico. "We've got a lot of events planned to celebrate the city’s history and creativity."

One of the upcoming highlights includes the unveiling of a brand new mural titled "Daydream" at the Camarena Memorial Library. Created by Calexico native Mia Salinas, the mural was designed to inspire imagination and pride in local talent.

"When I went to high school this shipping container was always here, but was always empty," Salinas said. "So to be able to have this opportunity is really cool."

The mural will be officially revealed on April 14 at 5:30 p.m. Community members are invited to attend.

Other anniversary festivities include the Lego World Art Exhibit opening April 15 at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center, and a time capsule opening at City Hall later in the week.

Calexico city leaders say the goal is to blend fun with community pride, showcasing both the city's past and the promise of its future.
