Crash between two high-speed trains in Spain leaves at least 64 dead

URDA, Spain (NBC, KYMA) - A devastating crash between two high-speed trains in Spain Wednesday morning leaves at least 64 people dead and another 80 injured.

The crash happened on the rail line in the Toledo region in Central Spain. Authorities fear the death toll could continue to climb to the scale of the crash.

Emergency responders and investigators rushed to the scene to help victims.

A local official told media outlets that the trains were traveling in the same direction from Madrid to Seville, when one ran into the tail of the other which had stopped on the rails.

More than 500 passengers were on board the trains at the time.

Wednesday's crash comes ten months after another crash between two high-speed trains on the same line left 45 people dead when one train derailed and hit an oncoming train.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was deeply saddened by the accident, and that emergency services are on site to aid those affected by the crash.
