Record breaking rain fall in Japan leaves 8 dead and thousands stranded

CHIBA PREFECTURE, JAPAN (NBC, KYMA) - Record breaking rain in Japan leaves eight dead and thousands stranded east of Tokyo.

20 municipalities are under the highest heavy rain and landslide warnings , level five in Chiba Prefecture.

Meteorologists warned of rain fall amounts of nearly 4 inches an hour. The city of Oamishirasato is inundated with feet of water.

The massive flooding causing four landslides in the city, collapsing roadways and trapping residents.

In Yachiyo, a man died in the floodwaters. Across Chiba Prefecture, several people died after being trapped in their vehicles in the raging floodwaters.

As of Friday morning, more than 7,000 people were staying in shelters.

At Narita Airport, al bus and train services were suspended leaving as many as 7,000 people stranded at the airport.
