Research examines float tank therapy as a natural stress reliever

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA) - Since the 1950’s brain researchers have studied the concept of flotation being a natural alternative for stress relief.

The Laureate Institute for Brain Research in Tulsa, Oklahoma is currently studying whether float tanks improve symptoms of stress-related conditions like PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

A float tank is a tub filled with about a foot of water and a thousand pounds of Epsom salt.

Research suggests the hour-long treatment slows the heart rate and relaxes the nervous system; ultimately reducing stress.

Inspired by this research, Toni Holland, a natural health expert of 30-years, decided to bring this service to Yuma with hopes of helping our veteran community.

“We’re a military community. There’s a high rate of suicide. So this is the only thing that I know of that’s non-drug related that will help with PTSD, anxiety, stress, and depression," Holland said.

Holland believes many people in the Yuma community work stressful jobs like first responders, border patrol agents, and service members.

So, she’s interested in seeing if floating would be an effective natural alternative to opioids and other drug use.

Holland's wellness center, Herbs 2 Oils will have its grand opening Saturday, February 22th at 11375 S Fortuna Road, Suite G in the foothills from noon till 3 pm.
