Deadly prison shooting in Juarez lets key cartel member loose
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Chih. (CNN) - At least 17 people died in a brazen armed assault on a prison in the Mexican border city of Juarez.
One of the tactics the cartels use in accessing the USA is disrupting the penal system in border cities, so this spells trouble here at home as well.
Mexico's secretary of state said one of the inmates who escaped has been associated with the Caborca cartel. He was singled out by the state as a key leader in that gang. It's a relatively recent cartel group rising in prominence, with close ties to the famed Sinaloa cartel.
The gunmen reportedly arrived with armored vehicles and opened fire on security personnel
Authorities said inmates took advantage of the situation and 24 prisoners escaped.
At least four people were detained, but who knows if that will actually stick
Mexico has failed to bring charges to major incidents in the past, such as when 42 students went missing under the Peña Nieto administration. They also came up with no leads after the helicopter crash of Puebla's governor.
