Proposed ballot initiative aims to cut inmate time for good behavior

Measure would only apply to non-violent offenders

PHOENIX, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - A proposal to cut the sentences of non-violent offenders for good behavior could appear on Arizona's November ballot.

Proponents of a state criminal justice overhaul filed their proposal Tuesday. It would allow the release of non-violent inmates after they serve half their time, if they've done so without any negative incidents. Currently, inmates generally must serve at least 85% of their sentences before being considered for release.

Under the proposal, prisoners convicted of violent crimes like murder and sexual assault would not be eligible for early release.

The initiative would also authorize the use of medical marijuana taxes to hire more substance abuse counselors for state prisons. Supporters say this would decrease drug crime recidivism.

Organizers have until early July to gather the 237,000 signatures need to put the measure on the ballot.
