Nogales police officer shot by carjacking suspect dies
A police officer in the border city of Nogales was killed Friday after trying to stop a fleeing carjacker.
The Nogales Police Department announced on its Facebook page that Officer Jesus Cordova succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to a hospital.
According to police, officers responded to reports of an armed carjacker around 2:40 p.m. Cordova spotted the suspect vehicle driving away from the scene. Authorities say Cordova initiated a traffic stop. The suspect got out and opened fire, wounding Cordova.
The officer was flown to a Tucson hospital where he died from his injuries.
The suspect, meanwhile, carjacked two more vehicles. He then fled from law enforcement on foot before being apprehended in a trailer park. He was taken into custody without incident.
Police say there are no other suspects at large. They did not release the suspect’s name.
Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada told Tucson’s KGUN-TV that Cordova was a former deputy for his agency.
