Calexico Police said 34-year-old Edgar Leongin was walking the streets on Monday morning with an arsenal of knives under his clothing.

Police Officer Jason Cole said, “As I was patrolling the Pauline Avenue, which is known for its high levels of crime, I made contact with this individual.”

He said Leongin was acting suspiciously and it’s their job to investigate all suspicious looking activity or behavior.

“His whole body was covered in two backpacks, which to me appeared to be a little bit odd,” Cole said.

He pointed out Leongin at first tried to avoid him and another officer as they approached.

“As I contacted him, he agreed to talk to me. As we were engaged in conversation, I noticed what appeared to be a concealed weapon on his waistband,” Cole said.

Police found several knives under Leongin’s clothing.

“A large hunting knife, three combat knives and a small dagger. A search of the backpack, I found what appeared to be a hatchet located inside the backpack,” Cole said.

Cole explained there’s been an increase in violent assaults recently.

“We’ve had what appeared to be two assaults with a deadly weapon cases and a possible third one that involved stabbings,” Cole said.

He pointed out that prior knowledge and familiarity with the area helps to fight crime.

“The fact that we’re familiar with a lot of these individuals does play a big role in our ability to solve crimes,” Cole said.

Police are now increasing patrols in targeted high crime areas.

Edgar Leongin is being charged with carrying a concealed dirker dagger – a felony. He could face up to one year in jail. Police said it’s not the first time he’s arrested for the same crime. No drugs were found in his possession.
