Mother diagnosed with rare case of cervical cancer

27-year-old Yuma resident Carmen Rios was diagnosed with a rare case of stage 3 cervical cancer and has the option to begin treatment.

Rios was diagnosed in October 2017.

“Although her general doctor was telling us there wasn’t really much to worry about, we just had to wait for it to go away. She was in so much pain, she was never really able to stay at work,” Jonathan Rios, her husband said.

Rios has a 9-month-old baby and says the doctors have discussed how aggressive and important it is for her to receive this treatment. Her tumor is 10 centimeters long and is crushing on her kidneys and bladder.

“They told us that she had a couple weeks to live,” Rios added.

After traveling from Yuma to near Los Angeles, they’ve found a doctor in Tijuana, Mexico. Their next obstacle – the treatment costs $20,000 in cash. Rios said that is just a low-ball amount, and payments are due on a week-to-week basis, providing more stress than relief.

Jonathan Rios spoke about how he felt after initially hearing the diagnosis.

“First thing that went through my mind was that… the thought of my son going… without his mother, growing up without the woman I considered to be the best mother in the world,” Rios added about his wife and recently newborn son.

On her GoFundMe page Rios said “I want to see my child grow, I get so emotional thinking my beautiful baby will grow up not knowing his mother.”

Jonathan said that his wife is the strongest of them all.

“Her willingness to live, it’s her desire to be here for her son and I. That’s what I admire of her the most because she’s just in a situation that’s so hard and she’s so strong,” Rios added.
