Cooler temperatures, wind, and Red Flag Warning for Thursday
Cooler weather is headed to the desert southwest Thursday. But it’s also coming with windy conditions, a Red Flag Warning, and a High Pollution Advisory.
The past week, we have seen daily high temperatures mainly in the 90’s, above our 85 degree normal for this time of the year. We tied and had near record high temperatures. High pressure sitting in our region is responsible for the warming trend. However, a dry cold front will be moving through our region, causing around a 20 degree drop in temperatures.
Winds will also pick up. In El Centro, winds will reach around 30 miles per hour, with gusts at 40 mph. In Yuma we will see winds up to 20 mph, with gusts around 30. We can expect wind speeds to start increasing Wednesday night.
Dry conditions will persist with the windy conditions, creating extreme danger if a fire were to break out. The conditions can cause a blaze to spread more rapidly. A Red Flag Warning has been issued as a result of the weather.
An air contaminant called PM-10 will be spreading in the air from the conditions, causing an High Pollution Advisory. PM-10 can aggravate those with asthma, and heart and lung disease. Residents are encouraged to try and remain indoors and avoid driving on dirt roads.
