It will remain hot this week, here are some tips to help keep cool
It’s the first heat wave of the season and the temperatures are going to continue to climb before a slight cool down next week.
News 11 spoke to health experts and the American Red Cross in Imperial County on ways to combat the extreme temperatures.
“I’ve even seen temperatures go up as high as 130 when I was in my younger days and everything, you know. So we’ve had some good heat waves here,” said Bill Browning, Certified American Red Cross Instructor.
Browning has lived in Imperial County for 70 years and is very familiar with the scorching temperatures. He shared tips on what to do during these extreme conditions.
“If you do drink Gatorade or a sports drink, mix it with water. That way your system will be adjusted to the intake of those fluids,” added Browning
The American Red Cross also suggests that people eat smaller meals and more frequently, along with various other tips for people to practice.
“It’s recommended to preferably go out either early mornings or late in the afternoon or the evening to avoid the hottest hours of the day,” said Karla Lopez, Epidemiologist with Imperial County Public Health.
And for those of us who do have to work through the heat, health officials recommend seeking shade whenever possible and drinking water even if you don’t feel thirsty.
“If that’s not possible then applying then applying the sunscreen frequently and making sure your kids are having enough liquids because even though they’re in a fresh environment they could still get dehydrated,” added Lopez.
“And then the dogs, a lot of people forget about the animals. Make sure they got plenty of fluid, plenty of water, make sure you got them under shade, and if possible put a fan outside,” said Browning.
There are also 29 cool centers located throughout the Imperial Valley where people are welcomed to go and enjoy an air conditioned environment. For more information on how to beat the heat you can visit http://www.redcross.org/local/california/san-diego.
