Proposed budget plan to expand San Luis Port of Entry
While there has been plenty of talk about President Trumps new budget proposal, the city of San Luis is reaping some of the benefits by getting a getting a major upgrade at one of their port of entries. This budget proposed by President Trump includes funding to expand and modernize the border crossing at ‘San Luis one Port of Entry’, that of which was created back in the 1980’s. The proposed budget would be for the fiscal year of 2018 and would be a $234 million dollar upgrade. This crossing is a major entry way for the people of Yuma county and Mexico and according to the General Service Administration, it’s the busiest non-commercial port of entry on the Arizona-Mexico border. Laura Herrera, the spokeswoman for the city of San Luis explains why there is such a need for this expansion. “The main reason is to relieve the border wait times that’s going to be the most beneficial impact for communities on both sides of the border. They would expand the lanes, they would create a brand new facility and expand on the one that is already there”, said Herrera. Herrera also adds that officials have been lobbying the federal government for over a decade trying to get these funds for San Luis to improve their border facilities and if all goes well, San Luis two port of entry will also be able to expand in the future.
