A bystander caught on his cell phone the dramatic end of a car chase that began near San Diego and ended with the car in flames in El Centro.
Border Patrol El Centro Sector Agent Alessio Faccin explained how the chase began.
“The vehicle failed to yield to the border patrol in the campo area,” Faccin said.
The car sped off, traveling north along curving roads at high speeds, heading towards the Interstate 8.
“The vehicle continued from campo eastbound to El Centro,” Faccin said.
The car took the I-8 east the Border Patrol in hot pursuit. At one point, El Centro Police joined the chase.
“Once it reached El Centro, it exited I-8 on 4 th Avenue,” Faccin said.
The car took the 4 th Avenue south off-ramp and headed south. As it p assed the social services buildings, it struck another car and then hit the sidewalk, causing the oil pan to be torn off. The car caught on fire and stopped just inside the social services buildings west entrance. Authorities surrounded the vehicle immediately and helped the car’s occupants escape the burning car.
“There were six occupants and they’re all in custody of the border patrol at this time,” Faccin said.
The six men were not injured. Charges are pending until the investigation is completed.
“We’re going to have to determine the reason why they failed to yield to the agents, and once that is determined we will be able to figure out which direction to go and possible charges,” Faccin concluded.
